Pablo Abain made it a hat trick of titles in Cardiff beating in form Kieran Merrilees today in the final of the men’s singles. Beatriz Corrales made it a perfect Spanish day lifting the women’s singles title, her second victory in Wales.

Leading up to the tournament history, statistics and fate would have suggested nothing else but a victory for Abian after previous wins in 2010 and 2013.  The European Games champion did not rely on the stars aligning to win this week but blasted his way to the title only dropping 1 set on his way to the title.

Abians opponent in today’s final was Kieran Merrilees. The Scot had shown some good form in Glasgow last week and Cardiff had been good to him in the past, claiming the title in 2014.

Merrilees put up a god fight in today’s final but the number 3 seeded Spaniard had to many aces up his sleeve taking the title 21-16 21-16

Beatriz Corrales made it two wins for Spain on finals day lifting the women’s singles title but was pushed right to the wire by Shuo Yun Sung of Taipei. The top seed was taken to three games in today’s final after coming through some tough battles during the week. Hard work for the Spaniard but a rewarding week after a poor showing in Hong Kong just the week previous.

Russians looking the real deal in Welsh rout

We have not seen much of Russian pair Anastasia Chervyakova and Olga Morozova this new season on the Badminton Europe circuit. The Russians have been busy however claiming their home Russian national title as well as the Russian GP title in Vladivostok.

This week in Cardiff they have proven to be a class above the field lifting the title without dropping a set. In today’s final Morozova and Chervyakova made no mistake in making a good Indian pair look average as Ponnappa and Reddy had no answers in a 21-16 21-11 defeat.

The win will take the Russian pair inside the world’s top 25 as Morozova as Chervyakova start to look like the real deal as a top women’s doubles pair.

Robert Mateusiak and Nadia Zieba took the mixed title from their top seeded position beating Scottish Open GP champions Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jemie Lai of Malaysia. The Poles proved impervious once again taking the title comfortably without dropping a set.

The manner of the victory was never really in doubt however it is almost unbelievable to think that Mateusiak and Zieba had never won in Wales, a statistic that they can now box away as one of Europe’s most prolific pairs this century.

In the very final match of the day Liao Min Chun & Cheng Heng Su won the all Thai battle to claim the men's doubles title over Liao Kuan Hao and Lu Chia Pin.
