The qualification stage to the European Mixed Team Championships next year already begin tomorrow, Friday 11 November. Five different group stages will, over the weekend, determine which five teams will reach the final stage February 15-19, in Lubin, Poland.

The seven highest ranked teams, including the hosting country, are directly qualified for the final stage, and they are the following: Denmark, England, Germany, Russia, Netherlands, Spain, and Poland(host).

In each group stage, the four countries will play one team match against each other; one match a day. Which results in two team matches a day – three days in a row, overall. Each team match consists of one men’s single, women’s single, men’s double, women’s double, and, one mixed double.

The countries competing in the five different groups, are the top 25 ranked-teams in Europe. The best ranked team in each qualification group, after the team matches have been played, qualifies for the final stage of the European Mixed Team championships.

Final preparations are coming together, and the host countries are almost ready for ‘kick off’ tomorrow. Badminton Europe has an employee in each location to report from the action each day, and you will find a daily recap right here on our website.

Group 1
The first group is hosted by the Czech Badminton Federation in the city of Karvina. Joining the Czech badminton team, in the battle to enter the final stage of the mixed team championships, are France, Luxembourg and Israel.

France are the favourites to finish ‘on top’ of the group, due to their highest seeded position out of all the teams in the qualification. Their opponents from Luxembourg [22] and Israel [19] have quite a challenge ahead, while the Czech team seem like the biggest challenge for Peter Gade’s French delegation.

Group 2
The Bulgarian capital, Sofia, will organize the second group stage for its contestants: Estonia, Lithuania and the Faroe Islands.

Bulgaria’s women’s team finished third at the European championships in 2014, proving an advantage on the female part of the mixed team. With, amongst others, a ‘Stefani and Gabriela Stoeva’-women’s double, Bulgaria are seeded to reach the final stage, being ranked second after France.

The Faroe Islands are the lowest seeded team in the qualification, and can, along with 16th seed Lithuania, look forward to playing against the favourites from Bulgaria, and their serious challengers from Estonia.

SCHEDULE FOR GROUP 2:

Group 3
In Dublin, Ireland will welcome the teams from Austria, Hungary, and Norway.

The home team from Ireland are serious candidates to going all the way to the final stage in February, and with the advantage of competing on home soil it does look like they will succeed.

But there is no doubt that the players from Austria, Hungary, and Norway will do anything in their power to make sure it does not happen. We find Hungary and Norway in the bottom of the seeding, while Ireland is seeded 3rd, and Austria only a single spot below the top 5 seeding.

SCHEDULE FOR GROUP 3:
Friday       Nov 11, 2016 –   1 PM:  AUT vs HUN
Friday       Nov 11, 2016 –   6 PM:  IRL vs NOR
Saturday  Nov 12, 2016 –   1 PM:  AUT vs NOR
Saturday  Nov 12, 2016 –   6 PM:  IRL vs HUN

Group 4
The Slovenian Badminton Federation have the pleasure of hosting the 4th group which includes Latvia, Switzerland, Scotland, and of course the hosting country of Slovenia.

As 4th seeds of the qualification, Scotland are aiming to finish first in the group. On paper, their strongest opponents seem to be the Swiss. But the being on home turf can also work as an advantage for Slovenia.

Nothing is certain and the teams will be giving it their all to qualify for the final stage next year.

SCHEDULE FOR GROUP 4:
Friday      Nov 11, 2016 –   2 PM:  SCO vs LAT
Friday      Nov 11, 2016 –   7 PM:  SUI vs SLO
