Badminton Europe organized a combined BWF Coach Education Level 1 and Level 2-course for (former) players, in close cooperation with the Spanish Badminton Association.

For the first time, there was also a day used on a Shuttle Time teacher-course. The course lasted seven days and took place in Oviedo, Spain from 16 – 22 October. Tom Causer, Jeroen van Dijk assisted by Fran Dacal were the tutors during the course.

14 participants from seven different countries started with the Shuttle Time course on the first day. After an introduction that showcased how use the resources best, the participants were asked to deliver one or two exercises of the first lesson of the lessons’ plan to each other.

The second task was to deliver a full lesson to each other, and, in the third and final task, they had to deliver a full lesson where they gave each other feedback afterwards. In the evening the Level 1-resources were handed out with a short explanation.

The second day started with the first modules of the Level 1 Coach Education; Coaching principles and Coaching Philosophy followed by the model lesson. Just before lunch the warming up, feeding and movement cycle were discussed.

After lunch, the hitting skills were done. In this session, there was some very interesting discussions because of the good badminton knowledge the participants have. Just before dinner, planning, goal setting, and learning styles were taught.

On the third day, we continued with the hitting skills and after lunch the participants were introduced to tactics. In the evening the participants had to deliver a practice session to four players. This session was the ‘player evaluating practice’ which gave them the opportunity to evaluate the players and make goals for the other three deliveries that would take place during the week.

The fourth day started with the explanation of progressions in tactical exercises, which was done on court. The day continued with a session where the participants had to deliver exercises to each other. The focus in this session was on technical progressions.

In the afternoon, the Level 2 resources were handed out and the first module that was presented was the annual planning. In the evening, the participants got the task to deliver a training session to the players with the focus on technical progression.

On day 5, the morning was spent by making annual planning schedules. In the afternoon and evening, physical fitness testing and the third delivery was done.

In the morning of day 6, the participants watched a mixed double match where they were asked to analyse the game afterwards. They discussed what happened during the match and how they would like to coach the players.

After the coffee break, the coaches had to deliver to each other again. This time they had to deliver a practice session which was made by one of the other participants. In the afternoon, physical fitness was on the program. In the evening the participants delivered their final session to the players.

On the final day of the course, the participants had to explain their annual planning to Tom and Jeroen in individual talks. Which was followed by individual feedback in the afternoon. In these talks the participants got to know their strong points and their weaknesses and what level they passed the course.

Badminton Europe would like to thank Fran Dacal and Oscar Martínez Salán for their help in making this course a success.
