Home success for Burkart & Schaller
Swiss double on home soil

Ahead of any tournament the dream of the host organiser is to have at least one home player in the finals. The Swiss International got that this week with not one but two participants in the final of their home international. The icing on the cake came when both Celine Burkart/Oliver Schaller lifted the mixed title and as expected Sabrina Jaquet reigned supreme in the women’s singles.

Jaquet was always the player to beat this week in Yverdon-les-Bains so it was not expected that the two-time Olympian delivered in front of her home crowd. The Swiss number one certainly did not get it all her own way this week after been taking to three games earlier in the week by England’s Lydia Powell. In today’s final Jaquet was again tested after losing the opening game to Lee Ying Ying of Malaysia, the world junior runner up.

Jaquet is made of stern stuff and she was not about to let home success pass her by and came back to lift the title in three games with a 21-15 win in the deciding set.

"Wow it is so great to win my first international title in front of my home supporters. Better late than never" Jaquet said via her facebook page

Schaller and Burkart (main picture) followed Jaquets lead against young French pair Gicquel and Delrue. The Swiss were taken to three games, a match that saw them drop their first set of the tournament. Like Jaquet, opportunities to win your home international don’t come along every day, and the Swiss top seeds steadied to take the match and the title 21-19 in the deciding set. A great day for Swiss badminton on home soil winning two out of the five titles on offer.

Seinen and Tabeling lift first title as a pair

There has been some re configuring of doubles pairs in The Netherlands after the retirement of Samantha Barning and the usual post-Olympic shuffle that goes on across all federations. Like the men’s doubles pair of Jille and Arends, the first we saw of new women’s doubles pair Seinen and Tabeling was in the Dutch Open just last week.

The new pair did not take long to make their mark winning the Swiss International taking down two Malaysian pairs and a Danish pair en route to the title.

In today’s final the Dutch beat top seeds and semi finalists from the Dutch Grand Prix Anscelly and Teoh. The Dutch lost the opening set and at 20-20 in the second the Malaysians were in the driving seat to lift the title. However, Seinen and Tabeling (pictured above) took the pivotal second game and with it the momentum and cruised home comfortable winners in the deciding set 21-10.

Elsewhere England’s Sam Parson’s continued his rise the world rankings by adding today’s men’s singles final title to the Hatzor title he won last year. 21-year-old Parsons had shown good early season form in Belgium where he made the semifinal and today beat top seeded Ukrainian Artem Pochtarov to claim the title.

“This win is probably the best of my career to date. Winning in Hatzor in 2015 was a big achievement but I have always wanted to be able to win international tournaments,” said Parsons. “Although I was up against the top seed in the final I went into the match thinking I had the ability to beat him. I had some tough three-set matches before I played the final but I have been doing the hard work in training and this has shown in my match play at tournaments recently,” he added. Elsewhere the men’s doubles title went to top seed’s Goh and Izzuddin after the Malaysians beat compatriots Chia and Wong in two games.
