After the Belgian International last week, the majority of the Indian contingent will make their way to Poland this week for the Varcolor Polish International. The net result leaves a huge task for the home European players given this week’s Polish International is an International Series rated tournament, one step down from last week in Belgium.

The biggest threat to Europe will come in the men’s singles and men’s doubles. Last week Sourabh Varma made the final in Leuven to be beaten by Lucas Corvee and realistically the Indian as fourth seed will be favourite in Bierun this week. Poland will be hopeful that Adrian Dziolko (main picture) as top seed can upset the Indian and with both on the same side of the draw are scheduled to meet at semi-final stage.

Denmark will look to Steffen Rasmussen and Rasmus Messerschmidt to come good this week while a European outsider for the title will be Felix Burestedt, the Swede impressed coming through qualification last week in Belgium.

Young Indian duo Devlekar and Kapoor made the quarter final in Belgium and will be dangerous this coming week. The return of Mathias Bay-Smidt to partner Frederik Sogaard will give Europe hope however nestled in the Danes side of the draw are the winners from Belgium Lu and Yang and the Chinese Taipei duo will be red hot favourites to go back to back in Bierun.

Just as the men’s singles and doubles looks ominous for an Asian win so too does the women’s singles. Soniia Su Ya Cheah travels as winner in Belgium and if the Malaysian plays anywhere near her current form suggests there is little hope for any European in the draw. Ukrainian duo of Voytsekh and Ilyinskaya represent Europe’s best outside chance but realistically a European success depends on the Malaysians form.

Women’s doubles and Mixed an opportunity for Europe

While it all looks a bit doom and gloom from a European perspective in both singles and men’s doubles there are realistic chances for European success in both women’s doubles and mixed doubles this week.

Voytsekh and Zharka (pictured above) are top seeds in the women’s doubles and much about their chances will be known as early as round 2 where they will face yet another travelling young Indian pair. English pair Moore and Williams have a relatively easy introduction to the tournament so will have time to grow with each round while Scottish duo Findlay and Pringle continue their return and sure to improve with each passing match and tournament.

In the mixed doubles Poland have a realistic chance with Pietryja and Wojtkowska as second seeds but the battle for gold might come down to an India V England shootout with Coles/Williams & Mairs/Moore combinations likely to feature.
