Carder (main picture) came into the tournament as fourth seed and his three set win over fifth seed Adam Mendrek of Czech Republic in the quarter final was a hint to the form of the Scot this week in Trencin. With the experimental rule system in operation Carder disposed of Mendrek 11-7 11-4 11-5. 

Carder followed up with a semi-final win over Ukrainian Kyrylo Leonov before sealing the title again in three games over Ivan Rusev of Bulgaria. The Scot was in a jovial mood after the victory claiming via his Facebook page that having to re-book flights and stay and extra night in Slovakia was well worth the trouble after winning the tournament. 

In the women’s singles Ukrainian Natalya Voytsekh got her new season off to the dream start lifting the title today in Trencin. Voytsekh came through some real tough battles throughout the tournament with her three game win over third seed Mariya Mitsova being highly impressive. The Ukrainian, the sixth seed this week, was taken to four games in the final eventually prevailing against Priskila Siahaya of Indonesia. 

Welcome return to form for Czech mixed doubles

Jakub Bitman and Alzbeta Basova (pictured above) have been inconspicuous by their absence over the past year on the circuit. A series of injuries put a large dent in last season’s performances so a win today was a welcome relief for the Czech pair, one of the circuits regular and most supportive pairs over the past number of years. 

The Czech number one pairing had little trouble in today’s final against surprise Slovenian pair of Ivanic and Arih. Once the Czech pair got the opening set under their belts there was no way back for the Slovenians. Bitman and Basova powered home 12-10 11-4 11-6 displaying some good form ahead of their home international which comes up at the end of this month. 

In the women’s doubles it was a case of another tournament and another win for Mariya Mitsova and Petya Nedelcheva. The Bulgarians only came together at the tail end of last season and two wins from three tournaments is a decent return for the Bulgarian pair with a mixture of youth and experience. 

Finally, in the men’s doubles there was only ever going to be one winner and the Polish pair of Moren and Szkudlarczyk duly delivered. The Poles were the class pair and were short odds favourites as soon as the entry list was released a few weeks back. Today and this week they dominated lifting the title without dropping a singles set, which is a feat in itself in the experimental scoring system of best of 5 sets to 11 with setting to 15.
