The 2016 European Championships is now just over a month away as La-Roche-Sur-Yon in the Vendee region of France enters the final stages of preparation to host Badminton Europe’s flagship continental championship.

With the final invitation acceptance date passed Badminton Europe are delighted to announce the selection of the 5 wildcards, one in each discipline, with Denmark’s Mathias Boe (main picture) set to rock the show in men’s doubles alongside the up and coming Mathias Christiansen while long standing partner Carsten Mogensen continues his rehabilitation from his post Kazan surgery.

France as hosts include Lucas Claerbout in men’s singles with rising star Yaelle Hoyaux selected to support Delphine Lansac in women’s singles. French national women’s doubles champions Delphine Delrue and Lea Palermo complete the home nation wildcards with England’s Ben Lane and Jessica Pugh being rewarded for their performances across the globe over the past 18 months at junior level with a wildcard in the mixed doubles.

Speaking of the wildcard selection Badminton Europe’s Senior Manager Jimmy Andersen was delighted with the choices and looks forward to the championships at the end of April.

MS: Lucas Claerbout, FRALucas Claerbout was an obvious choice for the wild card in men’s singles. A few weeks ago Lucas performed on highest level for his country at the #EMWTC16 in Kazan, playing a vital role in his team winning the silver medal. Lucas has also had an excellent season on the circuit and as one of Europe’s most improved players we are happy to be able to offer this wild card to Lucas, and we are sure he will perform at the same high level on home soil in April.

WS: Yaelle Hoyaux, FRAYaelle Hoyaux is an up-and-coming women’s singles player in France, and one of Europe’s highest ranked junior players in this event. Despite being just 18 years old, she already plays an important role in the national team. In Kazan she took an impressive win in her team’s match against England, by winning her singles. We look forward seeing her play against Europe’s best in April.

MD: Mathias Boe/Mathias Christiansen, DEN We are extremely happy to be able to offer this wild card to Mathias Boe, one of the world’s finest doubles players. Mathias Boe has, via his remarkable career, together with Carsten Mogensen, given so much to European badminton, so we are happy that we can offer him the opportunity of playing at our most prestigious event while Carsten Mogensen is still recovering from his operation. We are convinced that Mathias Boe, together with one of Europe’s coming doubles stars, Mathias Christiansen, will come to France in April, to create a few upsets and aim for a medal, or maybe even the title.

WD: Lea Palermo/Delphine Delrue, FRAThis young pairing, the French national champions in women’s doubles is a future hope for French badminton, so we are happy to be able to see them in action on home soil in Vendée. Winning the national championships in France shows the potential which these two girls have, and we are certain that they will do their utmost to create a few surprises at the 2016 European Championships.

XD: Ben Lane/Jessica Pugh, ENGAs one of Europe’s future hopes in mixed doubles and having won the European U17 Championships in 2014, been seen as Europe’s best junior pair over the last couple of years, and reaching a quarter final at the World Junior Championships in 2015 certainly shows the great potential of this young pair. They have already won their first international title on Badminton Europe’s Circuit, and we are certain that they will come to France with the highest ambitions and eager to show everybody that they belong at a European Championships.

The European Championships kick off on the 26th of April and will also see current European, double world and All England champion, Carolina Marin of Spain, attempt to defend her 2014 title.

Newly crowned All England champions Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov of Russia will be looking to defend the title they won in 2014 on home soil while Jan O Jorgensen will look to cement his status as Europe’s top men’s singles player and genuine Olympic medal contender by winning back to back European titles.

The draw for the 2016 European Championships will take place on the 12th April, following the announcement of the seeding on 8th April. For a full list of qualified players go to the dedicated Badminton Europe event page HERE or the official championship website HERE
