After the men’s singles opening round of day 1 of the 2015 Scottish Open Grand Prix today it was the turn of the remaining four disciplines to get up and running. It proved to be a good day for Germany with three pairs advancing to round two as Lamsfuss and Herttrich (pictured) toppled second seeded Americans to open up the bottom half of the mixed doubles draw.

The young German pair have really started to shine in their short few months together and today’s performance against second seeds Chew & Subandhi marks Lamsfuss and Herttrich out as a definite pair for the future for Germany. 

The Germans looked in complete control taking the opening game 21-18 and once secured steam rolled their opponents in the second game in what rounded off a good mornings work for Germany’s mixed doubles. Fuchs & Michels as top seeds eased past Coles & Williams of England while another new pair, Kaesbauer and Volkmann displayed the developing strength in depth in Germany’s mixed doubles with a two game win over Roe & Hopton of England. 

The only real blip on Germany’s copy book was the defeat of Siedel and Efler as the rangy Germans went down to a resurgent performance from Sam and Chloe Magee. A game that the Irish needed to win after a few sub-par performances in recent weeks. 

Mateusiak and Zieba continued their march to Rio winning easily in two games to set up an interesting tie against the returning Jenny Wallwork and Andrew Smith the most unlikely of mixed doubles pairings. 

Finnish girls shine on day two. 

Both Nanna Vainio and Airi Mikkela have a most healthy competitive relationship on and off court as both push for a place at the Olympics next summer. In fact, the Finnish pair are an example to all in what is a most stressful year. While battling to get the sole spot for Finland both girls have not lost sight of the important things in life and friendship even in competiton is one of those things both girls hold close to their hearts. 

This Olympic campaign has appeared to bring the best out in both and Vainio and Mikkela delivered in the opening round of the women’s singles this afternoon to make the Finnish battle for Rio one of the most interesting as we head into the second half of the qualification season. 

Vaino looked to be playing well within herself as she easily displaced the threat of Dorotea Sutera while Mikkela looks more composed with each passing week taking down seventh seeds Sabrina Jaquet in a three set game that 12 months ago she would most likely have lost. 

One of the big shocks of the day was the first round loss of Germany’s Karin Schnasse as Natalia Perminova finally found a way pas the first round proving persistence eventually pays off. 

Elsewhere the young Grimley brothers from Scotland, still just 15 years old, proved their European Junior form was no fluke after coming through qualification yesterday and today made the second round of the men’s doubles beating Adamson and Sankey of England. 

The young Scots now move on to the second round where they play another pair from qualification, Siedel and Lamsfuss of Germany. For the second time in just a few hours Mark Lamsfuss inflicted a defeat on Phillip Chew of USA, this time in the men’s doubles after the earlier mixed doubles victory alongside Herttrich.
