Norway’s own Marius Myhre did what no other Norwegian has done since 2000 winning his home International this afternoon in Sandefjord.  There was also a break through win for Denmark’s Sofie Holmboe Dahl (pictured) as the Danish youngster took her first International win after a series of good performances on the European circuit. 

Myhre had come into this year’s Norwegian International with mixed form over the course of 2015. The Norwegian number 1 showed some good form early in the year getting to the finals of both the Portuguese and Mercosul internationals but recent results would not have been any indication as to Myhre’s credentials for an assault on his home title. 

Seeded number 1 Myhre had the added pressure of gaze of the home support and delivered in some style today and throughout the week. Myhre was taken to three games in both the quarter and semi-finals before sealing the title in two games against Denmark’s Patrick Bjerregaard to lift the title, a feat no home player has achieved since Jim Ronny Andersen in 2000.

Equally as impressive was the march to the title of young Dane Sofie Holmboe Dahl. Dahl has been threading the boards of the Badminton Europe circuit this season and progression has been key. A last 16 in Belgium followed by a quarter final at the Swiss International and a semi-final in Hungary only a few weeks ago suggested that a win was not far away for Dahl. 

While a win was never far away it was the manner of her weeks work that impressed most as the Dane failed to drop a single game en route to the title. Not a single match extended beyond half hour and her 26 minute 21-13 21-12 win over Kati Tolmoff in today’s final signals the future is bright for Dahl. 

A natural progression for Gravholt & Overgaard.

Denmark’s Soren Gravholt and Nikolaj Overgaard lifted the men’s doubles title in what was certainly a case of natural progression for the Danish duo. Two weeks ago the Danes came up short in Hungary losing the final to Campbell and MacHugh of Scotland. 

As second seeds the Dane were favourites for today’s final match up against Swedes Eidestedt and Tandaputra and duly delivered in two games to put to bed the agonising loss in Hungary.

There was some disappointment for Gravholt however after coming up short in the mixed doubles final alongside Maiken Fruergaard. The Danes lost out to Australian pair Serasinghe and Mapasa. Indeed, it was to prove to be Setyana Mapasa’s day as the Australian teamed up with Gronya Somerville to add the women’s doubles title to the mixed title.
