World champion Carolina Marin continued her great run with a straightforward victory versus Indonesian number one Maria Febe Kusumastuti to move into the second round of the 700.000 Dollar Superseries tournament China Open. Michelle Li of Canada will be the Spaniard's opponent in the last 16 after she defeated US shuttler Rong Schafer in the opening round.

Leading European men’s singles shuttler Jan Ø. Jørgensen edged past his Japanese opponent Takuma Ueda 21-13, 21-13 in just 33 minutes to move into the second round of the China Open on Wednesday. The Dane will face Guo Kai of China on Thursday for a place in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, world number 6 and 7th seed Viktor Axelsen made it into the last 16 stage of the Superseries tournament. The Dane defeated Nan Wei of Hongkong in three games 18-21, 21-11, 21-18.

“It was the tough match I had expected but I'm happy that I managed to take the victory! Tomorrow I will face Wong Wing Ki Vincent also from Hong Kong. I feel a great support here in Fuzhou. Also, I get to speak a lot of Chinese, which is great fun”, wrote the young Dane on his official Facebook profile.

Irish number one Scott Evans battled hard but ultimately lost against his Korean opponent Lee Dong Keun 14-21, 21-18, 20-22 in a first round match that stretched for an hour and thirteen minutes.

Germany’s Fuchs & Michels spring a surprise

Michael Fuchs and Birgit Michels sprang an upset to defeat 2013 world champion Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia 21-19, 22-21 and reach the second round. The German duo saw off the former world number one in 44 minutes to book a last-16 date with China’s qualifier Liu Yuchen/Ou Dongni, who eliminated Koreans Choi Solgyu/Eom Hye Won in the first round.

Chris and Gabby Adcock, the number six seeds advanced to the next round as they beat Shin Baek Cheol and Chae Yoo Jung of Korea. After a tight opening game, which the Adcocks won with two game-winning points, the Koreans levelled after securing a healthy 12-3 lead.

But the Adcocks forced their opponents - who they also play in the upcoming Hong Kong Open first round - on the backfoot with two mid-game surges in the decider to set up a second round encounter with home hopes Huang Kaixiang and Huang Dongping, the world number 32 Chinese pair.

Denmark’s Joachim Fischer and Christinna Pedersen also booked a quarter-final berth, cruising past Dutch duo Jacco Arends/Selena Piek 21-10, 21-16.
