Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba marked their return to the badminton world stage at the Bitburger Open last week. The Polish number one duo and 2012 European Champions clinched the title at the 120.000 Dollars Grand Prix Gold event as they beat Chris Adcock and Gabby Adcock of England in two straight games 21-18, 21-17.

On their return from pregnancy (Zieba became a mother in 2014) and injury this year, the Poles enjoyed stunning success on the court at international tournaments. They claimed titles in Bulgaria, Belgium, Ukraine and Nigeria before their Bitburger Open success, and also reached the final at Yonex Dutch Open.

The Brits had led 15-13 at one point in the first game but their Polish opponents, who were world number one back in 2010 when they won the Indonesia Open Superseries, recovered and never looked back.

And Gabby admits her and Chris will now have to dust themselves off as they move forward with their season. "Disappointing end to the tournament," she tweeted after the final defeat. "Another tournament, another learning curve, time to rest up and get ready for China and Hong Kong Superseries."

Kolding/Conrad took their 2nd Bitburger Open title

In a repeat of the 2014 European Championships men’s doubles final, Mads Kolding and Mads Conrad of Denmark beat Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov in two games 21-18, 21-18 after 35 minutes of play. The Danes enjoyed their fifth victory in a row over the Russians since they lost the European Championships final in Kazan.

“Yesterday was a really big day for us. We won our second Bitburger Open title. After Denmark Open, we felt a lot of pressure to start making results. We wanted to deliver and we felt we were slowly getting closer and closer to the level we had earlier this year. We fought with ourselves in Germany this week. It was difficult to start from scratch without really having the time to have a chance to settle the result from the French Open”, the duo wrote on Facebook.

Angus Ng Ka Long defeated his compatriot Vincent Wong Wing Ki, who beat Germany’s Marc Zwiebler in the semi-finals, in the men's singles final to win the Bitburger Open crown on Sunday. The all-Hong Kong final saw the 13th seed overcome the 12th seed 21-12, 21-13 in just 31 minutes. Yakane Yamaguchi, the 2013 and 2014 World Junior Champion from Japan, beat Busanan Ongbamrungphan from Thailand 16-21, 21-14, 21-13 to clinch the women’s singles title in Saabrücken.
