World number one and top seed Chen Long (pictured) was in excellent form on Sunday when he beat Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia 21-12, 21-12 to win the men’s singles title at the Yonex Denmark Open in Odense in a lopsided final. It is the fourth Denmark Open for the Chinese number one shuttler after he already took the prestigious title in 2011, 2013 and 2014.

Denmark's Viktor Axelsen reached the semi-finals where he lost to the eventual champion Chen Long in three games. Jan Ø. Jørgensen, who was beaten in the quarter-finals, is the last European shuttler who won the Denmark Open. The Dane won in 2010.

Chen Long's compatriot Li Xuerui, Olympic champion 2012 and former world number one, triumphed in the women's singles category as she won the clash against India’s up-and-coming star P.V. Sindhu, who defeated world champion Carolina Marin in yesterday’s semi-finals. Xuerui saw off Sindhu in two straight games (21-19, 21-12) to land her first Denmark Open title.

Korean domination in the doubles events

Meanwhile, badminton powerhouse Korea showed pure domination in the doubles categories as they took three titles. World number one duo and top seeds Yong-dae/Yeon-seong whipped Liu Cheng-Lu Kai of China 21-8, 21-14 to take the men’s doubles title. In the women’s doubles, Kyung-eun-Seung-chan were given a walkover by reigning world champions Tian Qing-Zhao Yunlei after Yunlei failed to recover from a hand injury. Ko Sung-hyun/Kim Ha-na defeated favourites Ahmad Tantowi-Lilyana Natsir of Indonesia with a 20-22, 21-18, 21-9 victory in a 65-minute match.
