The BWF World Senior Championships in Helsingborg, Sweden is approaching its business end as the finals of all age groups – from +35 to +70 – will be played on Saturday.

Peter Rasmussen eases into the +40 men’s singles final. The Dane dominated his compatriot Gregers Schytt 21-15, 21-9 in the last four stage. The number one seed did not drop a single game on his way to the World Senior Championships gold medal match where the former men’s singles world champion (1997) will face Austria’s Jürgen Koch on Saturday.

The former Austrian number one shuttler Koch, a European Junior Champion in 1991, had a similar way to Saturday’s finals. In today’s semi-final, Koch, seeded at 9/16, beat Fernando Silva of Portugal 21-13, 21-12. Koch and Rasmussen have played each other two times during their careers. Koch won their first meeting in 1992 at the Polish Open, while Rasmussen beat Koch at the 1999 Swiss Open.

Boesen knocked out by Pukhov

Anders Boesen was knocked out in the World Senior Championships semi-final (+35) by Russia’s Stanislav Pukhov in two games 21-16, 21-18. The second seed will face Germany’s Thorsten Huckriede in the tomorrow’s gold medal match. Huckriede beat Jim Ronny Andersen of Norway in three games 8-21, 24-22, 21-12.

Heidi Bender continued her impressive run in Helsinborg to the finals by defeating Japanese Yuniko Yamamoto in two games 21-10, 21-10 while England’s Linda Wood, her opponent in the gold medal match, required three hard games to defeat her country-woman Janet Walker 14-21, 26-24, 23-21 in one of today’s most thrilling matches.

Per Dabelsteen reached the men’s singles final of the +65 age group. The Dane beat Gregor Bartmann of Germany (21-16, 21-15) to advance to the finals - where he will face Johan Croucamp of South Africa.

Defending champion Renate Gabriel beat Elvira Richter in an all-German semi-final in the +70 women’s singles event. Gabriel will now face Barbara Gibson of England.

Robert J Bell/Royston V Lord of England are through to the + 65 men’s doubles final. The unseeded British pair beat Per Dabelsteen/Steen Adam Kioerbo of Denmark 21-19, 21-13. They will take on Indians Vidya Bhushan Arora/Sushil Kumar Patet in the final.

European players represented in 31 of the 40 finals

The European continent is very well represented in tomorrow's finals in Sweden. In 31 of the 40 finals, players from Europe will fight for the gold medal.

The finals take place on Saturday morning from 11:00 (CEST) and can be watched via live streaming on YouTube.

A total of 1302 athletes from 48 countries entered the popular tournament whose seventh edition is being hosted by Badminton Sweden. Competitors are vying for the title of World champion in age-group categories ranging from +35 to +70 in both singles and the three doubles events.
