Coming into this 2014 edition of the European club championships many expected Van Zundert Velo and Recreativo les la Orden to battle it out of top spot of group 2 with the youthful Icelandic side TBR propping up the table as the whipping boys of the group.

Velo, the Dutch champions, dominated the group but few expected the Icelandic minnows to trouble the quarter finals spots. Team events are made for underdogs and today in Amiens the underdog came through as TBR (pictured) defeated Pablo Abian’s outfit to advance to the quarter finals.

The star of the Icelandic performance this week has been 20 year old Margret Johannsdottir who set the tone for the Icelandic performance with a two game win in the opening women’s singles. Johannsdottir partnered Rakel Johannesdottir to take a second point for TBR in the women’s doubles with only Pablo Abian providing any kind of glimmer of hope for the Spanish.

Alti Johannesson followed in Johannesdottir’s footsteps taking the men’s doubles alongside Daniel Thomsen before closing out the match for TBR beating Eliezer Ojeda in three games to the disbelief of the Spanish.

“It has been a very long time since we got to a quarter final of the European Club Championships” Said TBR coach Skuli Sigurdsson “This is a young team we have here this week and they have performed remarkably well and they can all be proud of their achievement here in Amiens”.

TBR will now face hot favourites Primorye Vladivostok in the quarter final in a nothing to lose, everything to gain tie for the Icelandic club.

A day for the underdog

In what proved to be a remarkable day in the history of the European club championships Italian minnows BC Milano also pull a rabbit from the magic Italian hat defeating Swiss outfit BC Uzwil to claim an unlikely quarter final in a very tough group.

Milano looked dead and buried trailing 3 matches to 1 and 1 game and 20-16 down in the second women’s singles. From nothing Thanaporn Tosangchai battled back to take the second game 25-23 before taking the overall match to a deciding rubber with a 21-13 win in the third set.

The ace up the sleeve of the Italians proved to be Wisnu Putro at second singles as the Milano man cruised to a win to send the Italian champions through to the quarter finals.

“We did not expect this at all this week. Tomorrow we have to leave our apartment we have rented here so we come to the hall we play and we see what happens.” Said Milano president Luca Crippa.

The Italians will now meet AIX from France in the quarter final after the French came through the early session with ease against TJ Sokol Vesely Jehnice of Czech Republic.

Multi Alarm from Hungary and Host Chambly make up the quarter finals by finishing second and first in their respective groups.
