The 2022 edition of the YONEX Belgian International will kick off in less than a day and there are plenty of performances to look forward to.

From Wednesday 14 September until Saturday 17 September in the city of Leuven, east of Brussels, will be hosting once again the YONEX Belgian International. Just like every year, top players not just from all over Europe, but also from around the world, will compete for the title in Sportoase Philipssite.

Matches will be starting tomorrow morning at 9AM (CEST) and fans will be able to follow all the action, from the first match of the qualification round until the last final, on www.badmintoneurope.tv.

After winning bronze medals in 2019 and last year, Dane Kim Bruun is back for this year’s editions of the YONEX Belgian International, having to face Chinese Taipei’s Lu Chia Hung who became the 2022 Denmark Masters champion. Another Dane who’s back for more medals in Belgium is Victor Svendsen, who was the runner-up both in 2018 and 2019.

There is a strong line-up of contenders in men’s singles. France will be represented in this event by some of their top young talents including Christo Popov, Arnaud Merkle, and Alex Lanier. Centre of Excellence’s Milan Dratva, Slovakia, will have his first match on Thursday against the only host country’s player in the men’s singles main draw, Julien Carraggi.

None of the women’s singles players that were standing on the podium in Leuven last year will be back to keep their spot. We will have a new set of medallists, and this will be an entertaining contest for the crown. Top seeded Lianne Tan will be looking to achieve a great result for the home crowd. Her first match will be against Centre of Excellence’s Martina Repiska, Slovakia.

Some of the best European performers in our circuit will push for those medals, with Estonia’s Kristin Kuuba, France’s Léonice Huet, and Bulgaria’s Mariya Mitsova amongst those competing, but international players such as USA’s Lauren Lam and Chinese Taipei’s Sung Shuo Yun will not make it easy for them.

Bjarne Geiss, who won the bronze in 2019, will be playing with Daniel Hess this year. The German duo will start off their journey in the tournament by facing Rasmus Kjær/ Frederik Søgaard, with Søgaard having also reached the podium as a runner-up in 2018.

The winner of the match will be playing against up-and-coming Danish talent. After a successful run in the 2022 European Junior Championships in Serbia just weeks ago, Christian Faust Kjær will be partnering with William Kryger Boe. The Danish pair won a bronze medal last year and will have to wait to see who their first opponents will be.

Amongst previous medallists at the Belgian International who are back for more, there’s Nao Ono, Japan, who won the silver in 2018 and will be partnered with Shiena Fukumoto. Scotland’s Eleanor O’Donnell, 2018 bronze medallist, will be competing with England’s Lizzie Tolman.

As the top seeded pair, we have Danes Christine Busch/ Amalie Schulz. This could also be a good tournament for Germany’s Leona Michalski/ Franziska Volkmann whose first opponents will be French duo Tea Margueritte/ Camille Pognante.

Amalie Magelund has already won two medals in this tournament and will be now trying to make it a third with partner Mathias Thyrri, with whom she partnered earlier this year. The first match for the Danes will be against Frenchman Nicolas Hoareau and Estonia’s Ramona Üprus.

Denmark will have many pairs competing in the mixed event, including 2021 runner-ups Jesper Toft/ Clara Graversen. England’s Jenny Moore, who won a bronze last year in women’s doubles, will only be competing in the mixed doubles this time, together with Gregory Mairs. Last year’s champions, Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa/ Natsu Saito, will have to wait to see who they will be playing first, but it could be Danes Sebastian Bugtrup/ Mai Surrow
