On 4-9 August, five nations came together in central Serbia to take part in a training camp and doubles tournament. Cyprus, Austria, Romania, Bulgaria and hosts Serbia took part in the successful project in the historical city of Kragujevac.

The focus of the Regional Project programme is to encourage Members to collaborate and form a development initiative to enhance the level of badminton in their region.

A total of 22 players took part in the intensive training camp for U15 girls which consisted of 20 training hours of two daily training sessions under the watchful eye of seven coaches. There was also a doubles tournament to test their skills and lots of fun social activities.

The BEC Regional Project ‘Girls Camp’ was organised by the Serbian Badminton Club RAVENS KG in close cooperation with the Badminton Association of Serbia and the city of Kragujevac.

It was the 10th edition, after a break last year, due to COVID-19, that Serbia has organised such an event under Badminton Europe's development program.

The focus
Debbie Lynch of Denmark returned as Head Coach. A job which she enjoys very much and was again able to bring her experience and knowledge during the intensive week of training.

On day three a doubles tournament was played with two groups of five pairs which gave the players many interesting and competitive matches.

-The main training focus points this year was, after agreement with all the players and coaches, on better footwork and speed changes and the ability to train longer with fewer mistakes. More focus was given to the technical backhand from the back court. We wanted to highlight the importance of every player feeling that they are special with social interaction and communication from the head coach and helpers and where the players themselves gave each other help and feedback, Debbie Lynch explained.

In terms of social activities, the participants could enjoy some time at the adventure park, listen to music outside in the town centre, an evening of social activity but more time was given to the players of the countries involved to socialise together due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Testimonials from players:

Irina - Romania
I found Girls Camp 2021 really fun and educational because I loved particularly all the training and activities. I got a chance to meet friendly girls and great coaches so my experience on this camp is a great one.

Eleni, Angeliki, Sofia - Cyprus
We really liked the experience of meeting new people and learning new stuff. Our favourite activity was the rope park. It was so much fun. Thanks coach Debbie for making us stronger, showing us new exercises and believing in us. We would love to come again.

Viki, Vasi, Eli - Bulgaria
We liked that there was time for training and for relaxing. The hotel was very nice - there was everything that we needed. Also, we liked that we met new friends.

Thank you!
Project Manager and the President of the Executive Board of RAVENS KG Badminton Club, Andreja Todorovic, was delighted by what he experienced.

-The atmosphere on the court during high quality and fairly intensive training was amazing, but so was the socialising of all participants off the court. This was the ten-year jubilee of the GIRLS PROJECT and it once again proved why it represents such an important event for the development of badminton in Serbia and the region.

-We take pride in the successful organisation of an excellent international camp while the  praises of all participants bring us joy and motivation for the years to come to raise the  level of organisation and once again welcome outstanding players and coaches from all  over Europe in Kragujevac.

-I would like to use this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to Badminton Europe,  Badminton Association of Serbia, the city of Kragujevac, all companies and participants in  the camp for their support in establishing this project.
