One of the main topics at the BWF Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2021 will be the scoring system proposal.
On Saturday 22 May the BWF Member Associations will be voting either for or against a scoring system proposal, proposed by Badminton Indonesia and the Badminton Association of Maldives seconded by Badminton Asia, Badminton Korea Association and Chinese Taipei Badminton Association.
The proposal is to change the scoring system from the current three games to 21 to five games to 11 points. If the score becomes 10-all, the side which gains a two-point lead first, shall win the game. If the score becomes 14-all, the side scoring the 15th point shall win the game.
On Thursday at the Pre AGM-Meeting between Badminton Europe and the BEC Members, the Board of Directors will recommend that the Members vote for the change.
First change since 2006
Badminton Europe General Secretary, Brian Agerbak, has been with the organisation since 2003 and he has seen changes in the international scoring system before. In August 2006 the current system was adopted, and the General Secretary recalls some of the key considerations for changing the scoring system again as this was also discussed at the 2018 BWF AGM.
- The key elements of the change of scoring system mirrors the change that the Badminton Europe Board of Directors and majority of European Members were strongly in favour of in 2018. Then and now the key arguments for the change are:
- More games will give more peaks
- Shorter games means that we will reach the peaks faster
- Matches will generally be shorter
- Uneven matches will finish faster
- It is the expectation the above elements will enhance the spectator experience. This may attract a larger fan base as well as providing for a better broadcast product. This will in return increase the commercial value of our sport.
