Yonex Dutch Open 2021 becomes an International Challenge

From 13 to 17 October we will have once again international top badminton at Topsport Center Almere during the Yonex Dutch Open 2021. The status of the tournament will be one lower this year: it will be an International Challenge instead of a Super 100 tournament. Below, we explain why.

Dutch men's team to Thomas Cup instead of Yonex Dutch Open

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, most international tournaments have been cancelled or postponed. The Thomas & Uber Cup 2020 (the World Cup for men’s and women’s teams) was first moved to week 41 - 2020 and is now scheduled for week 41 – 2021. Week 41 is also the week of the Yonex Dutch Open. A large part of the potential field of participants, including the Dutch men's team, is therefore not available for the Yonex Dutch Open in the form of a Super 100 tournament - an important reason for us to lower the status of the tournament for one year.

It is still being considered whether the Yonex Dutch Open could take place in another week in 2021. Due to the international tournaments that are already planned for the last 3 months of this year, combined with the question of the availability of Topsport Center Almere, the option to reschedule the event is no longer available.

All sponsors have indicated that they will continue to support us, of which we are of course very pleased. We also really appreciate that the Badminton World Federation and Badminton Europe have given us the opportunity to change the status to International Challenge for the 2021 edition.

Preparations in full swing
