The world number one lost in the quarterfinals at All England.

The reigning world champion will not be winning the All England 2021. Kento Momota lost in straight games to Malaysian super talent, Lee Zii Jia.

- I did not play well and I was rushing through the match and that's why I couldn't play my game. I did not have a chance to think through my play and that's why I struggled. I could feel the tensions throughout this tournament, Momota said.

All eyes were on men’s singles super star, Kento Momota, when he returned to court for the first in 14 months earlier this week. Today, at the quarterfinals day, badminton fans all around the world will also be talking about Momota – and about Lee Zii Jia.

First ever win
The world number one, had a 6-0 lead in the head-to-head against the 22-year old Malaysian, but on this Friday, Lee Zii Jia claimed his first win against the Japanese.

Momota took control in the opening game, but seven straight points got Lee Zii Jia back in, and the Malaysian won the first game 21-16.

One step closer to big upset for world number ten, and in the second game the Malaysian controlled. His countrymen hope that the young talent is “The New Lee Chong Wei”, and based on today’s result, Lee Zii Jia is on the right track.

Lee vs Caljouw
Lee Zii Jia won the second game 21-19 and will be facing Dutch Mark Caljouw in the semifinals on Saturday.

The beginning of 2021 has not been easy for Dutch Mark Caljouw. The men’s singles player, who will be a medal contender at the European Championships in April, has had some early round losses in Thailand and Swiss Open, but this week in Birmingham things going well for the Dutch.

Caljouw beat Indian youngster Lakshya Sen 21-17 16-21 21-17 in the quarterfinals.
