As part of the GEA project, several activities were delivered at the end of 2020. One of those was an online congress organised by our Ambassador, Mari Carmen del Casermeiro, at the Spanish Badminton Federation.

In August 2020, Badminton Europe launched the new Gender Equity Ambassadors (GEA) which aims at actively promote Gender Equity, thanks to the help of a Team of Ambassadors from a wide range of areas.

Spain, with a notable female athlete at the top of the badminton world in Carolina Marin, reigning Olympic and European champion, can draw inspiration from this figure, however, there is a lot of discussions to be had across multiple areas of the sport.

This congress consisted of four webinars focused on the integral development of a female athlete. Experts in different fields were invited to present their work on a wide range of topics which were addressed, from athlete psychology to physical training and nutrition.

Opportunity to share their doubts and experiences
The congress was a success, with 90 different participants registered, representing a broad spectrum of Spanish speaking countries: Ecuador, Cuba, Costa Rica, Spain, Mexico, Bolivia and Peru.

It is also important to state that different sports besides badminton were represented with padel, table tennis, boxing and gymnastics. Multiple organisations also attended this congress, from sports clubs to universities and medical experts.

Around 50 people attended each one of the webinars, with a slightly higher male participation, which can be explained by the fact that there are currently still more male coaches than female coaches.

BEC’s Gender Equity Ambassador, Mari Carmen del Casermeiro was delighted things went so well for the event.

-Thanks to this kind of action, the Spanish Badminton Federation has been able to provide people for every sports area. People in nutrition, physiotherapists, physical conditioning and many different sports, not only badminton had the opportunity to share their doubts and experiences with the experts invited.
