The Dane, Mikkel Mikkelsen, is playing both men’s and mixed doubles on the BEC Circuit tournaments as well as a couple of BWF’s tournaments.

Mikkelsen is partnered up with the young talent, Amalie Magelund in mixed, and they played Belgian International 2019 as their first tournament together. Despite it being their first tournament, they reached the final where they lost out to Ben Lane and Jessica Pugh from England. Only a week afterwards, they went to Poland where they won Polish International. Mikkelsen explains why everything works so well.

- Our strengths on court compliment each other very well.

- I am not surprised that it works so well. Amalie already played mixed at a very high level, when we were partnered up, despite her young age and lack of tournament activity in mixed doubles.

The Danish pair is currently ranked as number 84 on the world rankings. With their young age, Mikkelsen 27 and Magelund 20, they still have a lot of years to use all their potential. Explaining how far their potential goes, he says.

- I see our potential to go very far. We would like to climb the rankings to be able to be a part of the fun tournaments. There is still quite a way, but with more hours together at practice and tournaments, I am sure that it will not be too far in the future.

The bottom level needs to be raised

There is still quite a way before Mikkelsen and Magelund are at the same level as Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith and Selena Piek/Robin Tabeling. But Mikkelsen has the belief that they can reach their level.

- At the moment we are a bit behind the best pairs in Europe, but our top-level makes me believe in things.

- To reach their level, we need to raise our bottom level. Our top-level is really high, but the bottom level needs to be raised. We have a lot of things that need to be improved with more hours in the practice hall and more matches together.

Speaking about their goals for the partnership, Mikkelsen says.

- Our goal result-wise is to climb the ranking, so we can play some of the biggest tournaments. But we cannot achieve that, just by playing a lot of tournaments. Everything starts with a lot of practice in the hall, where there are a lot of things that need to be improved.
