Thygesen: It is the safest for everyone to stay home

In these unique circumstances, we have seen just how much sport united us all and plays a significant role in many people’s lives. Naturally, the focus has changed in adaptation to the national challenges of each country. Sports stars, who many people look up to, also have a responsibility in setting a good example for the public.

Sara Thygesen, a top Danish doubles player shares her opinion on the current situation.

- Right now, I am not practising at the national centre. I believe it is the safest for everyone to stay home for a while and avoid the high infection rate of the people here in Denmark (and the world). I am simply trying to do some workouts at home.

We must follow our government's rules
Thygesen took the mixed doubles gold at the first European Games five years ago in Baku with partner Niclas Nøhr. Since then she has added a European Championship mixed doubles silver in 2016, and two women’s doubles bronze medals in 2016 and 2018 with Maiken Fruergaard.

This year, she had a standout performance with Fruergaard at the Indonesia Masters, reaching the final after defeating the now 2020 All England Champions and also the reigning Olympic champions along the way. Knowing they are in good form this year; it is frustrating to have such a big change in the plans.

- It is hard to maintain my form - so that will not be at its best after this period. But I do everything I can to get my body going every day in every way possible.

-We still need to wait to see what they say about the Olympic qualification system. We haven't heard anything about that yet. Right now, I take it one day at the time - so many things keep changing. My coach and I haven't made any plans yet. We only know that we must follow our government's rules they announce for us, Thygesen says.

Family first
During this period, many people are having time to reflect and think about the people closest to them. Some who will not be contacted during the coming weeks or months. For Thygesen, this takes precedence over her day job right now.

-I am living on my own in Copenhagen and my family are two hours away - so I am not seeing them right now - and won't be seeing them face to face for a while. My parents are old, and my father is weak - so I am a little nervous about their health. But they stay inside and someone else will do the groceries for them.
