It is comeback time! Badminton will be part of the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2021.

Saturday, during the General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees in Warsaw (POL), it was announced that badminton will be part of the 2021 European Youth Olympic Festival, which takes place in the city of Banská Bystrica, Slovakia from 24 July to 1 August 2021.

Happy president
The last time badminton was part of the EYOF was back in 1999, and the Badminton Europe President, Slovakian Peter Tarcala, is happy to see badminton again being included in the festival.

- I am very happy and very proud that badminton now again will be part of the EYOF. It is a very big event, and our young talents deserve to be part of the biggest European youth event. The sports programme consists of only 11 sports, so it´s an even bigger achievement. It is great to be back after 22 years, Tarcala said.

- This also shows me that the relationship between the European Olympic Committees (EOC) and Badminton Europe is healthy. Badminton is part of the biggest European sport events, and that makes me happy, the President added.

Every second year
Following the Olympic principles, the EYOF fosters the spirit of friendship, fair play and tolerance, and the event enables youth from 50 European NOCs to meet and thus enhances European integration.

At the 2019 European Youth Olympic Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan, 48 NOCs participated, and the BEC President is sure that badminton fits in perfectly at the big festival.

- In the past we have seen that badminton is a perfect sport for a multi-sport event. Lately we have seen badminton being part of the European Games, and I promise that we as a sport will do our absolute best to make the EYOF successful, Tarcala said.
