Today marks a very important day for the world’s top Badminton players. They will all be hoping to book a spot on the plane heading to the biggest Badminton tournament, the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
How do they get there? The qualification period begins today, and will last a year. After this busy period, 172 places will be allocated amongst the players. So the emotions will be heightened and the heat turned-up for players fighting for every last point up for grabs. Will we lose any high profile players, maybe a few surprise names? But one thing is for sure we will be watching the exciting proceedings closely.
The numbers
As mentioned, 172 places are allocated. However, only 164 of these (82 each for men and women) will be decided through qualification. 8 places within singles will be invitational places (6) and for the hosts (2), equally split between Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles.
The initial number of athletes has been set at 38 for each of the singles categories and 32 (16 pairs) in each of the doubles categories.
